Senior Electronics Engineer - UAV & Ground Systems (m/f/d)

NEX Aero GmbH Office, NEX Aero GmbH HQ
Full-time
Permanent employee

About the role

As Senior Electronics Engineer, you will take hands-on, end‑to‑end responsibility for the design, development, integration, and testing of electronic hardware for UAV platforms and ground stations. You will drive the definition of electronic system architectures and own their implementation from concept through qualification and production readiness.
In this role, you will work closely with the wider engineering team and coordinate development activities with external partners and suppliers on a technical level. You will help establish robust design and quality standards and ensure that all electronic systems meet technical, operational, and regulatory requirements. While direct aviation experience is not mandatory, a proven track record with compliant (CE‑marked) electronic products is essential.

Your responsibilities

Your responsibilities
System Architecture & Hardware Design
  • Define and own the electronic system architecture for UAVs and ground systems, including compute, power, communication, and sensor interfaces
  • Translate system and product requirements into robust electronic designs
  • Drive schematic design, PCB layout, component selection, and design for manufacturability
  • Ensure proper consideration of reliability, thermal behavior, EMC, power integrity, and lifecycle aspects
External Partners & Supply Chain
  • Create electronics hardware specifications and provide technical guidance to external development partners
  • Review designs, documentation, and test results delivered by partners
  • Ensure alignment between in‑house standards and external development work
  • Support sourcing, supplier qualification, and long‑term component strategy
Integration, Testing & Quality
  • Drive hardware integration and verification, from bring‑up to system‑level testing
  • Define and carry out hardware test concepts, including functional testing, environmental testing, and compliance testing
  • Ensure high-quality documentation covering design, testing, and approvals
  • Contribute to regulatory readiness, including CE conformity and related standards
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Work closely with:
  • Software engineering (embedded, robotics, cloud)
  • Systems engineering
  • Mechanical design
  • Product management
  • Ensure coherent end‑to‑end system behavior across hardware and software boundaries
  • Contribute to system trade‑offs and technical decision-making at product level

Your profile

Required
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong professional experience in electronic hardware development for complex products
  • Proven track record delivering certified electronic products (e.g. CE‑marked devices)
  • Solid experience with:
  • System architecture and electronic design
  • Schematic capture and PCB development
  • Hardware bring‑up, debugging, and validation
  • Experience working with external development partners and suppliers
  • Structured, quality‑driven working style with a strong sense of ownership and ability to work independently
  • Fluency in English and strong technical communication skills
Strong Plus
  • Experience with electronics for UAVs, robotics, industrial systems, or communication devices
  • Familiarity with:
  • Power electronics and battery‑powered systems
  • High‑speed interfaces and compute platforms
  • RF, communication, or sensor‑heavy systems
  • Experience working in regulated or safety‑relevant environments
  • Exposure to production ramp‑up and lifecycle support
What distinguishes this role
  • End‑to‑end ownership of electronic hardware across UAVs and ground systems, from concept to production
  • Strong influence on product architecture and quality
  • Deep, hands‑on technical work on cutting‑edge UAV hardware
  • Close collaboration with software, systems engineering, and external partners
